With a 3 week break for exams Desertmartin entertained
Dungiven in a friendly on Thursday night. Played in a downpour throughout both
teams deserve credit for an entertaining contest.
Desertmartin 3-7 Dungiven 1-10
Desertmartin
attacked from the throw in and an early ball in found John Hughes who cracked a
shot against the crossbar. Dungiven then countered and from their first attack
found the net despite a good save initially from C Bradley. Desertmartin
actually dominated the game during the opening 15 minutes but some poor passing
and an insistance to go for goals when points were available proved their
downfall. Despite Desertmartin's domination Dungiven added 2 points to their
earlier goal to lead by 5. Eventually Desertmartin did get off the mark with a
pointed free and they then found the net when Sean Fullen followed up Enda
McGuckans initial effort, which was saved.
This score should have lifted the team but it was Dungiven who responded
best adding two points to lead by 3. Just before half time a John Hughes point
from a free reduced the deficit to 2.
Trailing by
two at the break having dominated possession the management had some harsh
words to say to the team.
The second
half began much the same as the first Desertmartin creating chances but
spurning them and Dungiven countering with scores at the other end. Eventually
though Desertmartin got their noses in front with 2 points from Enda McGuckan
and John Hughes and a goal from Enda. A Further point from John Hughes
stretched the lead to 3 but Dungiven replied with 2 points before John Hughes
added another point. Dungiven then had their best spell of the game during
which they added 4 points to regain the lead. Desermartin then responded with
their best move of the match the ball was fed in to Enda McGuckin who off
loaded to Sean Fullen his shot was
again brilliantly stopped by the Dungiven keeper but Paddy Trainor following up
cracked to the net. Enda McGuckan then brought the scoring to a close with a
point.
This was a
very poor performance from the team with to many players not prepared to work
hard enough for the team. The over insistance on going for goals when a point
was on could really have cost the team dearly. On the night too many players
played as individuals and failed to follow the team plan. With the first league
game against Lavey 3 weeks away there is much to work on. However the fact that
the team managed to get a result from the game despite the performance is
something, which can be worked on.
On the
night most of the best performers where in defence, with Paul Kidd very sound
at full back. The half back line worked hard throughout, with midfielder Cahir
Madden also showing well. Ferghal Higgins put in a lot of work in the half
forward line.
Man Of The Match however was Paul McFlynn who put in a tremendous performance in the half
back line.
Training
for the team is on Monday night at 6.15 at longfield
